The Kowhai New Zealand's National Flower

If there is one flowering plant that New Zealanders call their National Flower it is the Kowhai. It grows naturally throughout the dryer areas of New Zealand and because it is so popular it is planted in almost every garden. There are however 2 main species of Kowhai. Sophora tetraptera, North Island Kowhai and Sophora microphylla, South Island Kowhai. Where these plant grow side by side in the wild natural hybrids also exist. Many hybrids have occurred in gardens as well.

Additionally there are 2 naturally occurring varieties of S. micropyhlla and numerous forms, some of which have been named. The North Island Kowhai, Sophora tetraptera is the easiest to grow and fastest to flower when grown from seed. It is probably the most commonly available in the Nursery industry. As a garden plant the North Island Kowhai is excellent. With its fast upright growth it is ready to flower in 3-5 years. Luau Invitations

A Luau invitation deserves to be as funky and fun as the party itself. These are some ideas on how to create them.

The invitation cards help to set the mood for the party. A Luau invitation provides a great opportunity to be completely creative; out of the box. The invitations need not be at all expensive and you can even create a unique customized invitation by using clip art images along with a sprinkling of Hawaiian words on your office computer. The cards can be made fun by using some cloth or paper with colorful tropical prints.

A fun way to send an invitation would be to attach a pair of colorful sunglasses or a flower hair comb or bracelet, and mail them in a thick envelope or get them hand delivered.

Your invite should mention how you want your guests to dress up for your party. If it is a pool party, ask your guests to bring along a swimsuit and towel.

If you are good with design programs then you can even create an email invitation....

Flower Bulbs: Nature?s Greatest Gift

Flowers are one of nature's greatest gifts. Their scent, their colors, their shapes? everything about flowers is beautiful. A colorful, cheerful flower can brighten even the darkest day. Even more enjoyable than looking at flowers, though, is growing them. Flowers can be bought from pots and replanted.

They can also be grown from clippings. However, one of the most popular ways of growing flowers is from bulbs and seeds.

Growing flowers outdoors from bulbs is simple; in fact, it is so easy that it's almost foolproof. One of the most important aspects is timing. Bulbs need to be planted about six weeks before the first frost. Bulbs must be planted in an area with good drainage and a lot of sun.

Make sure the soil is loose, and then plant the bulbs about six inches in the ground. (Package directions may vary depending on type and location; when directions differ, following your package.) Try to place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end facing up. Cover...

Country Christmas Idea: Milkweek Pod Poinsettia Ornaments

Country Christmas Idea: Milkweed Pod Poinsettia OrnamentsAt first glance, milkweed plants and poinsettias don't seem to have much in common. If you live in an area where milkweed grows wild, however, you can use the dried milkweed pods to make poinsettia ornaments for your Christmas tree. Here's how:1. Collect some dried milkweed pods. In the fall, the milkweed plants have already gone to seed but the dried pods will still be attached to the plant.

You will need six "halves" of a milkweed pod for each poinsettia flower that you are going to make.2. After you have collected the milkweed pods and have brought them into the house, put them in a warm spot for a few days or a week to dry out more. This is especially important if it has been rainy and damp outside.3. Glue the milkweed pod halves together side-by-side in a circle so that they look like a flower. A hot glue gun works well for gluing the pods together.4.

Decorate your poinsettia flowers with spray paint and glitter,...
