Easter Lilies, A Coastal Treasure

Bill Ferry, spokesman for the Easter Lily Research Foundation announced the launch of their updated web site www.easterlily.net. The site has a fresh look as well as more links to information about the planting, growing and harvesting the beautiful Easter Lily.On either side of the border between Oregon and California, and within view of the Pacific Ocean, the soil and climate that is ideal to the raising of Easter Lily bulbs. This is the same bulb that is later greenhouse grown to produce such magnificent flowers. This small region, no more than a half mile wide by, perhaps, 12 miles long, contains such a superior mix of soil and weather that virtually all Easter Lily bulbs in North America are grown here. This is productive land. Seldom touched by freeze or drought, the soils have their beginnings in the nearby ocean.

This verdant land was once ocean floor.According to Lee Riddle, Director of Horticulture at the Easter Lily Research Foundation, the goal of breed improvement is to "develop more compact plants with better leaf retention and longer flower longevity." (Source: Woodruff Imberman -ChesapeakeHome MediaInc. http://www.chesapeakehome.com/ Garden/ easterlilies/ easterlilies.asp)But, producing quality, consistent lily bulbs proved to be an exact and demanding science with specific climatic requirements. Over the years, the total number of Easter Lily bulb producers dwindled down to just ten farms in a small, isolated coastal region straddling the Oregon-California border. This region, called the Easter Lily Capital of the World, produces nearly all of the bulbs for the blooming potted Easter Lily market. From the fields to the greenhouse to your home, the Easter Lily remains the traditional, time-honored flower of Easter. Symbolic of a resurrection, Easter Lilies rise from earthy graves as scaly bulbs, and bloom into majestic flowers that embody
the beauty, grace and tranquility of the special region from which they originate.Bulbs by the caseload are trucked to various regions of the U.S.

and Canada where they either remain briefly in cold storage to simulate a false winter (cold storage is necessary to trigger the next growth cycle) or arrive via refrigerated truck to a grower who then immediately pots the bulb and begins the forced cycle of growth in time for Easter. Luau Invitations

A Luau invitation deserves to be as funky and fun as the party itself. These are some ideas on how to create them.

The invitation cards help to set the mood for the party. A Luau invitation provides a great opportunity to be completely creative; out of the box. The invitations need not be at all expensive and you can even create a unique customized invitation by using clip art images along with a sprinkling of Hawaiian words on your office computer. The cards can be made fun by using some cloth or paper with colorful tropical prints.

A fun way to send an invitation would be to attach a pair of colorful sunglasses or a flower hair comb or bracelet, and mail them in a thick envelope or get them hand delivered.

Your invite should mention how you want your guests to dress up for your party. If it is a pool party, ask your guests to bring along a swimsuit and towel.

If you are good with design programs then you can even create an email invitation....

Child Beating

A majority of parents beat their children. Many school teachers punish children to correct them. They do it to teach them properly and make them good citizens of this world. How many of these parents and teachers themselves are good citizens of this world? How many of them themselves know what is right and what is wrong? How many have the knowledge of happy existence and how many have the right to beat a child?

No one. Absolutely, no one has any right to beat a child.

They beat the child, because the child does not retaliate. The child is helpless. The child is at their mercy. The parents and teachers take advantage of this and sadistically take out their own frustrations on the children. What if they try doing this to someone of their age and strength? They will get it back.

That is why they don't do that. They look for helpless children, find faults and beat. This is inhuman.

In any civilized society such practices should be punishable. A...

Sophora tetraptera, North Island Kowhai and Sophora microphylla, South Island Kowhai. Where these plant grow side by side in the wild natural hybrids also exist. Many hybrids have occurred in gardens as well.

Additionally there are 2 naturally occurring varieties of S. micropyhlla and numerous forms, some of which have been named. The North Island Kowhai, Sophora tetraptera is the easiest to grow and fastest to flower when grown from seed. It is probably the most commonly available in the Nursery industry. As a garden plant the North Island Kowhai is excellent. With its fast upright growth it is ready to flower in 3-5 years.
